Put it on the fridge

This past week came with some exciting news that I have been waiting for, for about 6 months, and in all actuality, several years. As I was taking a nap - as one does when they are procrastinating getting school work done - I was awoken by my phone blowing up with text messages and groupme’s. I was wondering what all the ruckus was about and then I saw that I had an email waiting for me in my inbox from the KU School of Nursing. In this moment, my heart skipped a beat, as this is what I had been working toward the past 2 years. I clicked on the email and read the words ``Congratulations” and immediately threw my phone on the ground in excitement. A sigh of relief came over me, I finally knew where I would be for the next few years!

After about five minutes of excitement I was already thinking about all the things I now had to do. I had to accept my admissions, set up my new email, pay the deposit, decline other acceptance, find a place to live for the next year in a new city, oh and there was that homework that I had been procrastinating. Seriously, I was hardcore apartment hunting within the hour. While there was this amazing excitement and sense of accomplishment, I couldn’t help but think about the ‘next thing’.

In life, I think we are always being pushed to think about the ‘next thing’. We do one thing only to get to the next and forget to celebrate the little victories and live in the present moment. Oftentimes, we give ourselves five minutes to celebrate or be excited about something, and then continue on working toward the next thing. Don’t get me wrong, we should always have a goal in mind and work toward the ‘next thing’. But what is our hard work without the promise of some kind of relief or celebration? It’s so easy to lose sight of the end goal of whatever it is we are working toward if we don’t give ourselves the opportunity to rest and celebrate the wins when they come.

Also, the wins don’t have to be something big like getting accepted into your dream school, or landing your dream job. It can be something like getting an A on a test that you studied really hard for or getting employee of the month at your job at a grocery store. Anything that represents your hard work is worth celebrating. So, here is your permission to stick that test to your refrigerator, get your favorite ice cream and celebrate the wins in your life, big or small.
